Get To Know Tunis
Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is a historic city of ancient wonders as well as a contemporary metropolis with modern conveniences. It is a mélange of indigenous Berber heritage, Islamic and Arabic traditions, Ottoman Empire legacy, and French colonial influence.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, the medina, the old section, comprises a sprawling maze of medieval streets and alleyways, numerous souqs, bustling cafes, and artisans at work. Tunisia’s top museum attraction is the Bardo Museum, housed in ancient palace complex. Visit Tunis’s Marché Centrale, where you’ll find local food markets featuring Tunisian specialties.
On the edges of this ancient media lie chic restaurants and entertainment venues that rival those of any world city. Just 16 kilometers from central Tunis lies the ancient site of Carthage, an archeological site where you can see Phoenician ruins.
For Mediterranean relaxation, the nearby La Goulette Beach has a large, sandy coastline perfect for walks, sunbathing, and taking in the expansive views.
Arabic is the official language of Tunisia, and French is widely spoken.
The Tunisian currency is the dinar, and the exchange rate is approximately 2.8 TND to the U.S. dollar.
